Words Are Wonderful: An Interactive Approach to Vocabulary Book 3 builds students' vocabulary skills through independent and collaborative exercises and activities on dictionary entries, word origins, context clues, similes and metaphors, idioms, compound words, onomatopoeia, alliteration, words with multiple meanings, synonyms and antonyms, prefixes, roots, suffixes, analogies, and footnotes. The selections are drawn from science (microscopes and microorganisms, protozoa, the blue whale, Venus flytrap plants); historical reports on ancient Greece and the Great Wall of China; biographies of Langston Hughes, Mildred Benson, Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, and Clara Barton; geography (Australia and the Great Barrier Reef; stories (folktale and legend); and poetry. This 24-lesson book is designed to meet state standards for vocabulary development. Every sixth lesson is a review. A separate, reproducible test book is also available.

The Words Are Wonderful Book 3 Teacher's Edition wraps around the reduced and annotated student pages and provides extensive teaching suggestions that include opening, instructional, and closing measures for each lesson. From a wide array of activities and exercises, teachers can choose those that work best for their students, including word walls, word sorts, shared and choral reading, interactive and independent writing, syllable claps, and picture searches.

 

The test book will help teachers assess their students' knowledge of the vocabulary words they have learned in Book 3 of Words Are Wonderful as well as their understanding of word elements and strategies for decoding unfamiliar words. At the same time, students practice multiple-choice test-taking formats that are widely used in mandatory state tests.
