Intervention strategies for struggling readers
by Nina Traub, Frances Bloom, et al.
Grades K–6

Recipe for Reading is a research-based, comprehensive, multisensory, phonics-based reading program that is designed for at-risk and struggling readers in grades K-6, or beginning readers. This program incorporates visual, auditory, and kinesthetic techniques to teach and reinforce phonics concepts. Recipe for Reading is ideal for differentiated instruction and works well in specialized classroom settings.

Student Materials
Workbooks—The nine Recipe for Reading workbooks follow the same sequence as the manual and provide extended practice in phonics concepts. Handwriting modeling and practice exercises as well as sentence completion activities are also included.

Writing Paper—This specially designed writing paper comes in four different sizes and allows students to work at their own level of fine motor development.

Alphabet Series Readers—Volumes 1,2, & 3 These illustrated readers help children apply and practice phonics by reading controlled, connected text. Each reader contains controlled vocabulary, allowing emergent and struggling readers to practice decoding and comprehension skills while they read motivating stories.

Teacher Materials
Teacher’s Manual—This revised Recipe for Reading manual contains a series of structured lessons beginning with initial consonants and progressing on to consonant and vowel diagraphs, diphthongs, spelling generalizations, and syllable patterns. The material is presented in a flexible format, allowing you to differentiate instruction depending on the specific needs of your students.

Sequence Charts—Sequence charts are designed to track and report students’ progress as they move through the curriculum.

Sound Cards—A set of 60 drill cards with a letter or letters on each side and a key word on the other side.

Affix and Root Cards—This series of 132 color-coded cards is designed to reinforce students’ decoding and vocabulary knowledge. A prefix, root, or suffix is presented on one side of a card and defined on the back.
