Course Description and Rationale:
This course is intended to assist Vermont educators to successfully teach the mathematics content reflected in Vermont’s Grade Expectations and Grade Level Expectations as described in the document entitled “Grade Expectations for Vermont Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities – Spring 2004.”
Teachers often have difficulty understanding the intent of these expectations and translating them into effective instructional practice that leads to true conceptual learning of mathematics. This course will explore the intent of the GEs and GLEs, and promote teacher skill in providing instruction that can lead children to mathematical proficiency through conceptual understanding. Participants will use manipulative materials to model mathematical situations and engage in problem solving with these materials.
